I owned a traditional computer service and repair business for 15 years.

Perks: make my own hours, work when I want
How did I get started: Went to the library researched starting a small business, went to my local permitting agency, got permits, filed for a DBA, found a commercial location, rented it, got signs made, spent lots of money advertising it, hired employees and then opened the doors.

Did everyone flock to my door …. nope, it took time to establish a decent client base.

The tedious stuff: filliing tax reports, making sure employees did not steal, which many times they do, working more hours than I ever dreamed of when I actually had a job (perks are not always perks – lol ),workers compensation, OSHA, etc…

Gave that all up and started a home based business. Even though I signed up online, it is product driven and not just clicking here and there on line, so when I decide to up and travel, I can still promote my business. No more employees, filing quarterly employee tax statements, no overhead and definitely time freedom I did not have in the traditional world.

Books: Anything Robert Kiyosaki writes, “The Slight Edge” Jeff Olsen, “Think and Grow Rich” Napoleon Hill … just to name a few.

I think the E Myth was an o.k. book, along with the 4 hour workweek. Robert Kiyoski’s books are interesting to read. There are a few more on http://www.novelwagon.com if you need a few. Guerilla Marketing was o.k.
